Girts Ozolins from Erica Synths gave an interview during a Modular Synthesizer Ensemble workshop in the Auditorium of the FEZ as part of Superbooth 2023.
He refers to this right at the beginning of the video, giving the impression that he is surprised …
“Synthesizers with Passion”
A short film about Erica Synths featuring interviews from the team!
The „Modular Table“ is a participatory musical instrument! „The modular band for everyone!“
Four modular synthesizers are built into the tabletop in such a way that they can be played by several people at the same time. Even without any previous knowledge!
The four different instruments offer a wide range of possibilities and have different functions in musical interplay.
Technical information:
The table has a surface area of 90cm x 90cm and is adjustable in height, the table legs are equipped with wheels.
An active, powerful loudspeaker is built into the centre of the table under the metal grille. A subwoofer can be connected as an option, which is also useful for certain situations.
The table can be set up in approx. 15 minutes and requires a 230V power supply.
How can the greatest possible degree of creativity and error-friendliness be achieved? By choosing a medium that is as haptic and experimental as possible, embedded in a space that invites everyone.
This is what happened during the workshop for the current exhibition MUSIK AUS STROM at the Volkskundemuseum. After a brief introduction to the history of the synthesiser, it’s straight down to the instruments: all the explanations are given in a deeply relaxed and almost self-explanatory manner, which leads to an exuberant jamming session. Just like in a classical orchestra – only democratic, unexpected and without hierarchies.
Popella – is a music festival for young and old. Popella stands for pop music that encourages and sensitises. A children’s music festival that is predominantly dedicated to modern styles, responds to the lifestyles and interests of today’s children and also appeals to parents. That is a clear statement!
This year, the MODULAR SYNTHESIZER ENSEMBLE was a guest at Popella in the Postgarage Graz. After a 4-hour workshop, the children played a live performance on the huge sound system in the large club room. It was powerful, not only because of the great sound system, but above all because the kids put on a masterful performance – listen for yourself.
Because Popella is so great, here is the aftermovie:

DEUTSCHLANDFUNK – Tonart
Modular synthesiser, music from electricity

They buzz, creak and squeak: modular synthesizers have changed the musical landscape permanently. Today, they are often used as software replicas. But how does the original play? That’s what you could learn at the Elbphilharmonie.
